Purpose of Regional Critique Groups (RCGs)

The purpose of Regional Critique Groups is:

  1. To get more members active at the local level at little expense while providing an educational activity that benefits our members and WSO.
  2. To create autonomous groups who can set up specific demonstrations and workshops appropriate in length and subject matter to the specific requests of its members using WSO instructors at reasonable rates.

  3. To form an identifiable group to exhibit their work at the conventions and other WSO exhibitions

The Board agreed to create Coordinator positions to chair each RCG. Their duties could include:

  1. Be the primary contact for members needing a critique group.

  2. Maintaining a list of local professionals-for-hire at reasonable rates who are willing to attend a local critique group meeting to give help or demonstrate specific techniques

  3. Coordinate educational requests for workshops to the Education Council from the various critique groups within their area, and

  4. Be responsible for creating committees to juror any exhibitions/show entries if needed locally or for WSO convention displays.

  5. Report to the Education Council Workshop Chair, serving as a member of the Education Committee.

The committee addressed the question, "Should WSO offer different levels of education geared to the interests and skill levels of its members? Three categories of artists were identified:

  1. Recreational--Members who consider art education a means to gaining new skills in a social setting conducive to learning but have no goals to become serious artists;

  2. Semi-Professional--Members who want further education as part of their goals to become serious artists, and

  3. Professional--Members who are well on their way to achieving their goals (winning awards and selling paintings) but seek information and skill updating at a higher level than beginning workshop subject matter.

We need additional feedback from past and future workshop participants to evaluate whether the subject matter of these 5-day workshops has been directed more at the first group. Are these workshops not filling because they don't appeal to members from groups 2 and 3 above? The Board approved using the evaluation forms presented for both participants and instructors. All WSO educational activities will begin to use these evaluation forms. Your cooperation and input is greatly appreciated.
