"Paint the Hills"
By Kim E. Smith

Prineville Oregon! The oldest town on the "other" side of the state is also almost at the exact center. The whole town is excited to have so many artists coming to visit. Come and share in the beauty of Central Oregon.

Prineville Reservoir

When I first mentioned moving to this area someone in WSO said "Oh! Can you do art there?!" Well, yeah! There's more to paint within an hour's drive of my front door than I will ever get to. (But I'm sure gonna try!)

Our meet and Greet Friday evening will show off Faye Taylor's new Main Street Gallery (the Bunkhouse Studio.) The Exhibition, Banquet and Reception will be at Meadow Lakes Golf Course on the River.

Kara Pilcher, well known WSO leader, will be hosting the Show and Tell. This is your opportunity to share your work and ideas with fellow WSO members. Bring up to 5 slides of your paintings and share in an informal setting whatever you would like to tell us.... or just come and listen to fellow painters. It is always a treat to get to know each other better and share our art and experiences. A great learning and inspiring time, too!

Painted Hills

If you don't take the tour of the Painted Hills you will miss something special. A 47 passenger Touring Coach has been reserved for Saturday morning to take WSO members 45 miles east on Hwy. 26 to this National Monument to sketch and photograph. Some may want to carpool with friends for a more leisurely tour. I recommend going right at dawn for wondrous lighting.

Painted Hills

Another 'can't miss' drive is along the Wild and Scenic section of Hwy. 27 from Main St. South through the Crooked River Canyon. First you will see farms and ranches, then river views, mesas and palisades. Stop to hike at Chimney Rock (1.3 miles) for more spectacular views.

Crooked River Canyon

Chris Keylock Williams will lead a paint-out along the Crooked River. We all know Chris; Past President, a great teacher, and frequent award winner. Another paint-out will be held at Pioneer Park next to historic Crook County Courthouse. Paint the courthouse or an authentic frontier cabin. There is a covered area if weather is uncertain.

On Saturday afternoon Kara will give a presentation on painting for theme shows at the Crook County Library. A fun and inspiring way to organize an art show is by painting with a theme. In this session several critique groups will be represented, share slides of their work, and discuss different aspects of theme shows they have held. If you would like to participate as a presenter in this session, please contact Kara Pilcher, 503-663-0145.

Mark your calendar and set aside Wednesday, Thursday and Friday October 3rd, 4th and 5th for Susan Cowan's watercolor workshop in Prineville. Note this is a change from our usual 5 day workshop by our jurors following the convention weekend. It is just 3 days, but promises to be action packed. Look for the sign-up form in this issue of Watermark.
