Hood River Spring Convention--April 4, 5, 6 2008
By Mary Rollins
There will simply be oodles of activities for WSO members to partake of during the Hood River Spring Convention.
On Saturday morning, you may choose to attend the paint-out at Mayer State Park, which is situated on the Columbia River east of Hood River. Local watercolorist Bonnie White will lead the paint-out. She is well-known for her ability to capture the river and the surrounding mountains. Another paint-out will be held at the same time at the historic Gorge White House, led by Carol Barnett. Go to its website www.thegorgewhitehouse.com, to better appreciate this beautiful house and its scenic location.
Also scheduled for Saturday morning will be a demonstration and paint-in by Ruth Armitage. This will be held in the Columbia Center for the Arts classroom.
At 11:15, Marty Rudolph, an art marketing consultant, will explain the value of “the voice of the artist” and discuss market strategizing. She will talk about how selling your art depends on the connection you make between yourself and the buyer.
For Saturday afternoon, Judy Hoiness will lead a paint-in at the Columbia Arts classroom, including a demonstration of her unique approach to painting. In addition, LaVonne Tarbox-Crone will demonstrate her special techniques for foregrounds and backgrounds in still life paintings. This lecture-demo will be held in the Columbia Arts Theatre.
For people interested in non-art activities, a guided wildflower walk is planned for Saturday morning, and a guided bike or walk on the Hatfield State Trail for the afternoon.
Beyond these choices, there are many other activities that can be arranged individually, such as White Salmon River rafting, visiting the Discovery Center, the Full Sail Brew-Pub or the Fruit Museum. The downside is that there won’t be enough time to sample everything. But have fun trying!
Digital Image Submission Workshop

You put your heart and soul into your paintings, so make sure the digital image you submit is worthy of all your hard work and shows off your painting to its best advantage! Plan to attend this informative workshop - led by Dale Leix of "Today's Photo" and Suzi Blaisdell, WSO Image Coordinator - at the show in Hood River on Saturday from 12-12:45. Learn to create a CD, save your image in the JPEG format, rename the file, and make sure the file size is what is required. |
Best Western Hood River Inn, Spring 2008
By Mary Rollins
The Best Western Hood River Inn’s exceptional location on the Columbia River is a drive of 60 miles east of Portland. The route on I-84 is always remarkable, especially in the spring. Guest rooms are decorated in attractive Northwest, and many of the rooms have a panoramic view of the Columbia Gorge from balconies or decks. Fine dining can be enjoyed at the Inn’s Riverside Grill, Copper Salmon Pub, or the new Cebu’ Bamboo Lounge. A heated pool, whirlpool, exercise room, and walking path to the nearby marina add to the amenities. It is not unusual to see osprey flying overhead, or view ducks swimming from the outdoor patio. The costs of the rooms range from $80 to $95, depending on the type of room reserved. Please make your reservation before March 13th. Best Western Hood River Inn may be reached by calling 541-386-2200, or 800-828-7873.
The activities for the convention weekend will be divided between the Hood River Inn and the Columbia Center for the Arts, utilizing their gallery, classroom, and theater. Expanded details on the April convention will be forthcoming in the February edition of Watermark.
