Start Making Your Plans for Brookings, April 2010
By Nola Range and Horst Wolf

Reserve the weekend of April 9 – 11, 2010 for a trip to Oregon’s Banana Belt, a narrow strip of land on the southern coast of the state, about 30 miles long and 1 to 3 miles wide. This Banana Belt is known for its year-round superb climate: warm in winter and cool in summer, with Brookings smack in the center. To find out more about the town, go to www.brookingsor.com.

Convention headquarters will be the Best Western Beachfront Inn, Oregon’s only hotel located on the sands of the Pacific Ocean. Each room has a spectacular ocean view. For more details, go to www.bestwesternoregon.com.

Co-chairs Lorelei Hanna and Horst Wolf are the convention organizers. On Friday night, April 9th at the Meet and Greet, we will introduce our juror Stephen Quiller in the hotel’s meeting/banquet room, where a no-host bar with select wines and hors d’oeuvres will be set up.

The Exhibit will be mounted in the Manley Art Center (MAC), the home of the Pelican Bay Arts Association (PBAA). On Saturday afternoon, there will be an artists’ reception at MAC with wine and hors d’oeuvres, compliments of PBAA.

The Awards Banquet on Saturday will be at the Brookings Elks Lodge, with a buffet dinner prepared by their volunteer kitchen staff known for their delicious meals and efficient operation. A full bar will be available, and entertainment provided by our favorite “Rogue River Jam,” a vocal/instrumental quartet under the leadership of WSO member Sharon Guinn.

On Saturday, from 9 to 12 am, four separate painting sessions are planned:

(1) Dauna Roberts, art instructor at the Southwestern Oregon Community College (SOCC) Gold Beach, will lead a paint-out at the home of WSO member Dale Wells, where Harris Beach State Park is only a few steps from his living room.

(2) Sara Broderick, art teacher at SOCC Brookings as well as The College of the Redwoods in Crescent City, CA, has reserved the Gazebo at The Cove, a residential area close to downtown, for a painting session. The Gazebo is located on a bluff, has windows all around and a 180-degree view of the ocean.

(3) Alexandra Eyer and Pat Renner will demonstrate figure painting, using easels to draw and paint a model in five, 15 minute sessions. Alexandra will demonstrate how she arrives at her complementary color vibration effect. Pat will find a figure on a wet-in-wet surface.

(4) Audi Stanton, Brookings artist and art instructor, will conduct an acrylic collage workshop in her home using torn pieces of 300 lb watercolor paper. Save your scraps of used 300 lb watercolor paper for this fun project.

Other Saturday Activities:

  • Stephen Quiller’s Critique Session(s)
  • Helicopter rides to see the town and the picturesque coastline from above. 15- and 30-minute rides are envisioned, possibly at sunrise and/or sunset.
  • Golf at the Salmon Run, a 72-par course nestled in the forest just outside the town.
  • Fishing Trips: both ocean and river fishing charters are available at the Port of Brookings-Harbor. This might entice more husbands to come along.
  • Redwood Trail: if being dwarfed by giant redwoods and wandering through their cathedral atmosphere is what you’re looking for, join Charlie Blozinski, an active local hiker and nature buff.
  • Photographing the Coast with Bill Schlichting, reporter and editor for the Curry Coastal Pilot, Brookings’ own newspaper. Bill will take you along little-known coast trails and deliver you to some of the most beautiful ocean vistas in the world.
  • Wild River Coast Bus Tour includes stops at Brandy Peak Distillery, the Capella (a small architectural jewel surrounded by Azalea Park), the Port of Brookings-Harbor, and dramatic coastal overlooks including Whaleshead, Natural Bridges, and Arch Rock.
  • Brookings’ Second Saturday Art Walk, from 4 to 7 pm. There will be art, refreshments, and musicians -- also artist demos, poetry readings, cooking demonstrations, dance performances, humorous skits, and mini concerts.

Other activities are still in the works.
